Farm holidays in Umbria among alpaca, hiking and the art of food
Alpacas are part of South American Camelidae family together with guanaco, vicuna and llama.
They are native to the Andes where, together with the llamas, they have been bred for over 5.000 years.
The guanaco and the vicuna, however, remain in the wild. Unlike their cousins, camels and llamas, alpacas are not used as transport animals.
Rather, the alpacas are known for their fleece and their docility. The fleece of the alpacas is appreciated for its lightness, shine and silky touch, as well as for its incredible thermal properties.
Not surprisingly, fabrics made from this natural fibre were once reserved for dressing Inca emperors.
Alpacas are docile and can become affectionate pets. They are social animals who like to stay in groups. They communicate with a pleasant sound, called humming.
Alpacas have a serene temperament. They are often taken by an attitude halfway between curiosity and shyness, with the first that generally prevails over the second.
They are intelligent animals, easy to deal with and can be handled by anyone, including children.
The MARIDIANA ALPACA was the first company in Italy to have managed a breeding of alpacas and angora goats for the production of fine fibres.
The alpacas, together with the angora goats, graze in the 30 hectares of our farm located in a hilly area in the “Valle del Niccone”, “Alta Valle del Tevere“, on the border with Tuscany.
MARIDIANA has more than 15 years of experience in the management of this type of breeding.
In collaboration with ENEA and the Universities of Perugia and Camerino, MARIDIANA has carried out a series of studies on adaptation to Italian conditions, behaviour, nutrition, genetics, health and fibre production.
Currently MARIDIANA has one of the largest alpaca farms in Italy.
